Sarah Biglow on Kickstarter

If you have followed my publishing career for a while, you may know that I launched a campaign on Kickstarter back in 2018. it funded and I was able to cover costs to produce Spring’s Calling. You may have also seen my retrospective, in which I noted I didn’t foresee myself using the platform in the future.

If you take a look at the title of this post, you may be going “Wait a minute…what gives?” Well, a few things have changed since that post and that campaign. I am more established in my author career. I have a backlist which I can pull from to offer enticements to backers. Plus, the platform itself has changed. There are more Publishing projects. Heck, as of this post, the number 1 most funded project is Brandon Sandersen’s Four Suprise Novels.

I have also gained some knowledge from other authors who have made it a large part of their publishing strategy to launch series on Kickstarter. So, I am going to be taking another swing at this platform, but I’m adjusting my approach.

What does that look like? here’s the quick rundown:

  1. In about 99% of the campaigns I have planned, the product being funded is already 100% complete and ready to go. This means for new series, backers get at least a 6-month exclusive access to the books before they are live on retailers. They will be available for pre-order following the campaign but only backers will have the books at that time.
  2. I will be using this strategy to launch new series. Each campaign will seek to fund between 2-4 books at a time. That means in some cases, backers will get their rewards up to a year ahead of general release.
  3. Backers will get access to exclusvie campaign perks that won’t be available* outside of the camaigns.

* For shrot story content, I reserve the right to use them as reader magnets at a later date, but backers have first crack at the new content.
